Located in the North West side of Sardinia island - Alghero
Located in the North West side of Sardinia island, Alghero is one of the preferred Italian destinations by foreign tourists and a popular holiday place for many Italians. Luxury and comfortable hotels, wonderful coast and beaches, a live town with plenty of history and traditions, a busy night-life are all part of the same equation in Alghero.
The Alghero riviera is called "Riviera del Corallo", the name comes from the coral found in the sea depths and the local production of coral and gold jewels. The coast South of Alghero is wild and it can be admired from the Alghero - Bosa panoramic road. The coast North of Alghero is a piece of natural heritage with many tourist attractions, among these: the Le Bombarde and the Lazzaretto beaches, the Porto Conte bay, the Capo Caccia white tall cliffs, the Grotta di Nettuno (Nettuno's Cave) and its 656 step access stair running on the hill side over the sea. Within the urban area the coast offers a beautiful port and long beaches. Many of the best Alghero hotels resorts are located directly on the seaside.
Life in Alghero can be very relaxing or exciting depending on everyone's whishes, there are many things to do during the day and night: shopping, relaxing at one of the bar or pub eating ice creams or drinking a beer, having dinner or a pizza, moving to one of the disco's. Typical Sardinian food, with a Catalan input, seafood and wines will be a positive experience for all travelers. Alghero transpires its history as a Spanish Catalan ruled town for nearly 4 centuries till the 1720, the perimeter of the old town is protected by fortification walls and towers, the streets and squares invite people to spend some time hanging around in the evenings. Many hotels are near the center but if you prefer a hotel in the Fertilia, Porto Conte and Capo Caccia area it will only take few minutes to reach the town.
The best time to travel and visit Alghero, we believe, depends on the seasonal weather conditions. June, July, August and September are the best months for a summer holiday, i.e. beach and swimming, with July and August being the hottest and busiest months. May and October can be lovely months but water not always so warm for swimming although many people, especially from Northern Europe, will find the water perfect and the beaches not very busy. In April Sardinia is green and in flower, at least once you should see Sardinia during Spring, water normally too cold for swimming. Remaining time of the year Alghero is a live town and hotels near the center are open, time to pay a visit to the town, admire the coastal and countryside area, taste the food and wines, do some shopping, relax and pay little money. 15th of August, Italian summer bank holiday, is the busiest day in Alghero as in many other places in Italy. Alghero is also a typical destination for the New Year's Eve celebrations and during Easter time. Hotel rates vary greatly during the year, the highest rates being charged in August, this suggests some planning for your vacations if possible.
It is easy to reach Alghero in Sardinia from the mainland. Alghero airport, called also Alghero Fertilia Airport, is just few minutes drive from the hotels in the area. Flight connections to Alghero are available from main Italian and European airports. Ryanair offers cheap flights to Alghero from London Stansted airport. The nearest port is "Porto Torres" at about 35 minutes drive from Alghero. Porto Torres is well connected to mainland Italy and France.
